Grimsby Borough Appoint Dave Smith as Director of Football

Grimsby Borough Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Dave Smith as the club’s new Director of Football — a key addition that further strengthens the club’s structure both on and off the pitch.

In this role, Dave will be tasked with building the footballing infrastructure of the club, with a clear focus on the First Team while also developing a sustainable model that creates a clear talent pathway for the long-term future of Grimsby Borough. He will lead all football operations, acting as the vital link between the management team and the Board of Directors.

Dave brings with him a wealth of experience and a reputation that is second to none within the local football community. Having spent many years involved in the grassroots game, he is widely respected by players, coaches, and clubs across the region.

Speaking on his appointment, Dave said:

“I’m delighted to be back involved in football after a little time away. The project put forward by the chairman and board was one I bought into straight away. I know a lot of the people around the club, as well as within the First Team squad, so it felt like a natural fit to join and support where I can.”

Dave has already played an important role behind the scenes in recent weeks, supporting the club during a period of change. His presence has helped ensure continuity and stability, while contributing positively to the environment around the squad.

He added:

“We’ve built a really strong relationship in a short space of time. The management team were handed a very tough situation when taking over and have done an impressive job in building the spirit, getting results, and lifting the place. We’re aligned on plans for the future and building on the start that’s been made.”

Further strengthening the footballing structure, Dave will be joined by Matty Powell, who takes on a supporting role working alongside him on player recruitment and squad development.

Like Dave, Matty is highly regarded within the local football scene and brings strong knowledge, connections, and enthusiasm to the role. Together, they represent a significant asset to the club as it continues to build for the future.

Dave also highlighted the importance of the supporters in the club’s journey moving forward:

“The fans are the football club. I’ve seen the support and the commitment of the volunteers - it’s the true heartbeat of this club. We want to continue growing that fan base, so I’d encourage everyone to bring a mate down and get behind what we’re building here.”

This appointment represents another positive step for Grimsby Borough, as the club continues to strengthen its foundations and work towards long-term success both on and off the pitch.

Jase Flint - Chairman

"We are delighted to welcome Dave Smith to our Football Club, an appointment I have been working on throughout most of this season. Myself, Kev and The Board have been discussing the importance of strengthening our leadership structure with the addition of a Director of Football, and Dave is the perfect fit for the role.

His experience and knowledge will improve our footballing identity and provide valuable support and direction to our Management structure.

Like many within the local area, I have known Dave for a long time, and I am confident that his strengths in recruitment, his extensive non-league knowledge and his managerial background will prove pivotal to the Club’s continued development. His existing relationship with Tom and Easty also creates a strong and positive foundation that we believe will support progress across the First Team, our Reserves, and the developing player pathway planned for next season.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to both Dave and Matty Powell to Grimsby Borough and thank them for recognising the vision of the project and choosing to be part of it. The last six weeks have not been easy, but throughout that period they have demonstrated the work ethic, skillset and character that will help drive the Club forward.

Neither Dave nor Matty require much introduction, and everyone at the Club is very pleased to have them on board."

Welcome to Grimsby Borough Dave & Matty!
